KAPADO

The Burnaby Blue Foundation is partnering with the KATABOI PASTORAL DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION (KAPADO) which is a non-profit making and service delivery organization that was recently established by Gabriel and other individuals in Turkana.

It was formed as an initiative to play a pivotal role (based on a 7 year plan) on natural resource management, education, human rights and advocacy, environmental conservation and food security. It is therefore unique in as much as it has a vision!

REGISTERED OFFICE

The registered office of KAPADO is situated in the Republic of Kenya; the HQS is in Kataboi Location in Kataboi center in Turkana North District.
 
ORGANIZATION MISSION STATEMENT 

To build a strong interpersonal and community institution that can empower the local people to identify and initiate their own developmental activities and assist them cultivate from their own potential.

VISION

To work towards achieving sustainable development for the Kataboi community in promoting literacy, empowerment and utilization of locally available resources.

GOAL

Our goal is to enhance the realization of tangible and sustainable development through provision of quality education

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

 
KATABOI PASTORAL DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION (KAPADO) is a non- profit making and service delivery organization that was recently established. It was formed as an initiative to play a pivotal role based on a 7 year plan on natural resource management, education, human rights and advocacy, environmental conservation and food security. The organization seeks to bring about empirical and long term social empowerment and holistic development amongst the Turkana people in the areas of education, pastoralism and fisheries, which offer the possibility of an assured livelihood in this part of the world. It also aims at improving the quality of life of Turkana people living in difficult circumstances by involving them in all stages of project circles right from being initiators, beneficiaries and in the long run becoming the owners of the entire developmental process.
 

To achieve the set mission as well as the vision, KAPADO has set principal objectives for which the organization is enhanced meanwhile as it plays the part of a facilitator.  These objectives include enhancing the provision of quality education through sponsorship programmes and building of learning institutions.  Specifically:

  • To support community initiatives on peace and development to enable peaceful co-existence and sustainable utilization of the available natural resources.
  • To facilitate improvement of water supply for domestic use, agriculture and livestock.
  • Establish adult education and literacy centers
  • Empower community to advocate and campaign for their rights through civic education seminars, workshop, public gathering and meetings.
  • To train the community on gender sensitivity and mainstreaming and through capacity building, putting more emphasis on girl child education
  • To create awareness on penitent issues as environmental conservation, respect for human rights amongst others
7-YEAR DEVELOPMENT PLAN
 
The first year is now being utilized by the management team for fundraising, implementation of sponsorship programme, which is ongoing, and designing other project programme in accordance with the objectives.
 
The 2nd, 3rd to 5th year will be dominated by implementation of varies interventions identified as specific to the organizational goal. The 6th to 7th year is envisaged to include programme evaluation, modification and commissioning the project to the community for sustainability and realization of intended vision against set objectives.

ORGANISATION STRUCTURE
 
KAPADO is a member organization which requires good co-ordination in order to facilitate participation at different community levels .the Executive Committee and General Council is the overall supreme organ of organization. The member meetings elect 90% of executive committees while the rest are co-opted members to bring expertise to the organization. Executive Committee is the overall entity in charge of management in the organization.
 
Under community development Act programmes, KAPADO will identify projects which will address the basic socio-economic needs of the community. These include; education, peace and capacity building, food security programmes, programmes will have rehabilitation, interim generating activities, restocking and livestock marketing
 
RESOURCES WITHIN THE ORGANIZATION
  • Organization constitution which defines ways and how the organization is operates
  • Organization management structure, which oversees its operations.
  • Personnel staff trained in community development, educational field, public relations, personnel management and health.
  • Land for the project.
CAPACITY BUILDING
 
For effective and quality running of the project, KAPADO has conducted many planning meetings and management workshops for both management staff and members. These include training technical staffs who are involved in implementation of activities. It is ready in all capacities to facilitate vocational workshops in promoting community development and awareness creation.  It gets its staff on voluntary basis upon proof trustworthiness and competitive performance.  
 
 GENDER ISSUES
 
 Our key objective is equal empowerment and participation of the both women and men in decision making on developmental activities. Women are encouraged to take leadership roles in the project. The organization targets both girls and as beneficiaries of sponsorship and other programmes with broader community outlook and involvement in creation of wealth. The Executive Committee forms final decision making body.
